How to upload a new script version
Replace a project's script with a new draft in Storiara. A new upload resets scenes, breakdown, schedule and budget, and only the owner can do it.
Each project keeps a list of script versions, and one is active. Uploading a new script to a project that already has one is a reset. The scenes and breakdown are generated again from the new file, and the work built on the old scenes is cleared. Only the project owner can do it, and the app asks for confirmation first.
What a new script deletes and keeps
| Deleted, for everyone on the project | Kept |
|---|---|
| Scenes and shots | Earlier script versions |
| The whole breakdown: cast characters, locations, props, wardrobe, vehicles, makeup, effects, background | Cast and crew |
| The schedule: stripboards, shoot days, day breaks, and Day Out of Days | Equipment and documents |
| Budgets | Accounting |
| Script revision history | Call sheets already sent, and on-set reports |
It can't be undone. If the schedule and budget matter, duplicate the project first and upload the new draft to the copy, or export the budget before you start.
Steps
- On Projects, find the project card and click Edit.
- In Edit project details, scroll to Scripts. The current draft carries an Active badge, with its upload date and who uploaded it.
- Click Upload script and choose the file. PDF, Word (.docx), Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain, Highland, Celtx, and WriterDuet (.wdz) files are accepted.
- Read the dialog titled Replace the script and reset this project? It names the file and lists what is deleted and kept.
- Click Reset and regenerate. The file becomes the active script and the breakdown starts again, even if it is the same file as before.
The file is read before anything is cleared, so a file that can't be read leaves the project as it was.
Go back to an earlier draft
Earlier versions stay in the Scripts list. Click one and the dialog Re-pull content from this script? explains that pulled scenes, locations, cast, assets, and effects are deleted and pulled again from that version, while items you added or edited by hand are kept. If scheduled strips or hand-added items depend on the current scenes, Can't switch script versions yet lists what to resolve first.
First script on an empty project
An unscripted project, or one whose script was never uploaded, takes its first script without a reset. Editors can do this, not only the owner. In the edit dialog, use the upload under Convert to scripted project.
If it doesn't work
- "Only the owner can replace the script": you are an editor on a project that already has a script. Ask the owner to upload it.
- "This PDF has no readable text": the PDF is a scan. Export the script from your screenwriting app as PDF or FDX and upload that.
- A message that the file is not a script file Storiara can read: export to one of the formats in step 3.
- Breakdown not started after the upload: the script was saved but the breakdown could not begin. Open Scenes and retry from there. See how to retry scene extraction.
On a TV show, each episode has its own script, and replacing it resets that episode's scenes and takes its strips off the show's schedule while the rest of the show stays. For a first upload, see how to import a script. The My Stories guide covers the rest of the edit dialog, and revision colors explains how drafts are usually tracked on paper.
