How-to ยท Shot list

How to build a shot list

Add shots scene by scene on Storiara's Shot list page, set shot type and images, reorder or move shots, and place them on the stripboard.

The Shot list page is where the director and DP plan coverage scene by scene. Storiara doesn't suggest shots. Every shot on the list is one you add, and from there it can sit on the stripboard under its scene and print its image on the call sheet's back page.

Steps

  1. Open Shot list under Coordinating. Scenes are listed in script order, and the Scenes panel on the left jumps to any scene.
  2. On a scene's header, click Add Shot.
  3. In Add New Shot, confirm the Scene and enter a Shot Name, like "Maya's POV of the door".
  4. Choose a Category. The list runs from Establishing Shot, Master Shot, and Wide Shot (WS) through Medium Close-Up (MCU), Close-Up (CU), Insert Shot, Point of View (POV), Over the Shoulder (OTS), and Two Shot, to B-Roll, Special Effect (SFX), and Other.
  5. Add a Description (Optional) with lens, movement, or blocking notes.
  6. Click Add Shot. Shots are numbered by scene, so the second shot in scene 14 is 14.2.
  7. Hover a shot and click the pencil to open Edit Shot Details, where you can change the name, category, description, and the shoot length in minutes, and attach an image. Click Save Changes.
  8. Drag shots to reorder them inside a scene. The arrows icon (Move to another scene) moves a shot to a different scene, and the trash icon deletes it.
  9. Click a shot's location to set where it shoots in Edit Location.

Seeing and printing the list

Turn on Show images in the toolbar to add an image column, and pick a ratio (16:9, 2.39:1, 1.85:1, 4:3, or 1:1) so frames display at your aspect ratio. The printer icon prints the list, with images if Show images is on.

Getting shots onto the schedule

The calendar icon on a shot points you to Schedule. There, a scene strip expands to show its shots inline underneath it, and unplaced shots wait in the boneyard. Drag a shot onto a day and it joins that scene's strip there, or gets its own row if the scene isn't on that day.

A scene with shots can't be carried through a script version switch, so finish revisions before a big shot list pass.

If it doesn't work

  • "No Narrative Breakdown Found" means the story has no scenes yet. Import a script or add scenes first.
  • If an uploaded image doesn't show in the list, turn on Show Images.
  • Shots can only be placed once the production schedule has dates.

A printable version of the format is in the shot list template, and the Shot list guide covers the page.
